Portland Police were called to the Ross Island Bridge around 3 a.m. on a report someone had jumped from the bridge.  The Ross Island Bridge is 125-feet above the river.

They found a man on the bridge who said his friend wanted to swim across the river, so he took off his shoes and shirt and jumped from the bridge into the river below.

Officers immediately called for Portland Fire & Rescue, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard to dispatch boats to begin searching the river for the young man.

At this point, he has not been located.

Based on the investigation, this does not appear to be a criminal incident or a suicide attempt. Alcohol may have been a factor in the decision to jump.
