Sunday afternoon, Gresham Police and medical personnel responded to a report of a crash that had occurred on the ramp to westbound I-84 from NE 181st avenue.
It was reported to police that a large van with nine passengers had rolled at least once.
Witnesses also said that one occupant of the van appeared to be deceased, which was confirmed by police and medics upon their arrival at the site of the crash.
Gresham Police called the Vehicular Crimes Team, a multi-agency unit used to investigate all major crashes, to the scene to investigate the crash at that time.
Through interviews with witnesses and occupants in the van, police learned that there were five adults and four children inside at the time of the crash. The deceased passenger was an 11-year-old female from Portland. The other occupants of the van were all taken to area hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. At this time, some of the occupants of the van have been released from the hospital and some are still being treated.
The driver of the van is cooperating with the investigation, and police do not believe that the he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It is possible that weather and environmental factors contributed to the cause of the crash. As part of the investigation, the van will be examined to determine if there were any mechanical issues and if safety restraints were being used by all of the occupants.
